I see this common misconception everyday. It's either on some bodybuilding forum, fitness website, or even from personal trainers. It's that ab exercises will actually help you burn fat, and this can't be further from the truth. Ab exercises will build muscle, yes, but that's all they will do.
Most people spend a lot of time searching for that "miracle ab workout" that will tone their entire core and help them lose weight quicker than the time it takes you to read this article. This is not only wrong, but if you believe it, can be a huge waste of time. I see plenty of people complaining everyday about not being able to get a six pack despite doing cardio and crunches everyday for hours. And there's a reason why this alone doesn't work.
Simple cardio and crunches doesn't boost your metabolic rate high enough for you to actually start burning fat. In order for this to happen you need to participate in full body, multi-jointed workouts. This will put more strain on your entire core and shed weight faster than any other technique or "pill" you'll read about on the internet. It is the most natural and effective way to burn fat, hands down. Here are a few of these exercises:
1) Deadlifts
2) Squats
3) Mountain Climbers
4) Sprinting
Of course, there are a good amount more and if you're unfamiliar with these you can youtube them for proper form and technique. If you design your workouts around doing these exercises 2-3 times a week instead of relentless crunches and cardio you will see results exponentially faster. This is why I tell most people to focus less on getting their abs and more on decreasing their body-fat percentage. Because if they shave that fat, most people will discover they do actually have those ripped and toned abs underneath.
So to summarize:
Ab exercises don't burn fat.
Full body, multi-jointed workouts are the most effective way to lose weight.
